Neck Injuries May Mean Much More Than a Pain in the Neck

Posted on 2010-05-25 19:21:30

The mere mention of a neck injury causes most of us to unconsciously touch our neck.  Sure, neck injuries are certainly associated with issues like headaches, migraines, carpal tunnel syndrome and other health issues.  But some researchers now believe there is a causal link between neck injury and disease conditions such as MS and Parkinson's.

Researchers in Glasgow, Scotland found that MS and Parkinson's symptoms were irritated or even brought on by "cervical (neck) cord trauma."  Meanwhile a 5 year study of 81 MS and Parkinson's patients found that 78 of them had a previous neck injury.  This is incredible information which underscores the necessity of quick and accurate treatment for neck injuries and proper diagnosis of spinal and brain trauma.

If you have suffered any kind of neck injury, it is extremely important to obtain an accurate diagnosis and proper treatment immediately.

Injuries, Neck Pain, and Back Pain Linked to Sleep Loss

Posted on 2010-04-01 20:06:40

Injury (including chronic neck or back pain) can ruin your quality of sleep according to scientific research. (Sleep Med Rev 2001;5:385-96)  The same nerves that tell your brain to feel pain, will "nudge" your sleep center and keep you awake.  Chiropractic has been shown to be an excellent remedy to these types of pain syndromes.

Don't be fooled by over-the-counter sleep aides like Nytol, or precription pills like Halcion, Valium, Restoril.  Not only can these produce serious side affects (including addiction).  In fact, benzodiazepines like Valium and Dalmane have been known to double your risk of being invloved in a motor vehicle accident (Can Fam Physician 1998;44:799-808)

TOP 5 TIPS to HELP YOU GET TO SLEEP

1. Exercise every day

2. Maintain a healthy diet (mediterranean diet for example)

3. Keep a consistent sleep schedule

4. Explore stress-reduction techniques

5. Don't watch television, read, eat, or work in bed

Chiropractic helps with a healthy lifestyle and is excellent at resolving chronic or acute pain or injuries.  Staying out of pain, means being one step closer to a good nights restful sleep.

Whiplash and Jaw Problems like TMJ or TMD

Posted on 2010-03-28 05:46:54

Many people don't realize that sustaining a whiplash injury can affect more than the neck.  This injury can last a long time and can be caused by even a minor fender-bender.  Many studies link whiplash injury to temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD).  One study in 2008 examined 187 whiplash victims and shockingly found that "TMD could be verified in ALL patients with WAD."[whiplash associated disorder]  These scientists found that TMD is regularly found in whiplash patients and relief from suffering will not be achieved without treatment.  [HNO 2008;56:1114-21.]

After an accident, it is very important to properly document your injuries with a doctor who is trained and experienced in dealing with injuries like these.  We work hard staying on the cutting edge of whiplash diagnosis and treatment to help those suffering neck injuries achieve the speediest possible recovery.  Screening for TMD and referring patients to the best doctors for treatment is an important part of care for any whiplash patient.

Make sure you and any other passenger in the vehicle are checked immediately for these conditions following ANY car accident, even ones that seem minor.

Car Safety Facts which help avoid neck and back injuries for your children.

Posted on 2010-03-23 19:26:21

Infants should be in a rear facing, properly installed infant seat until they are at least 1 year old and weigh 20 lbs.  At that point they can be in a forward facing seat with a 5 point harness until the age of approximately 4 and weight of 40 lbs.  Children age 4-8 years old should be in a proper booster seat using the seatbelt.  This information was found at www.nhtsa.gov.  We treat many people with injuries derived from car accidents.  The last thing we want to see is an injured child who was not properly restrained for their own safety.  Car accident injuries (even the hidden ones) can occur at speeds as low as 5 mph!  There is no such thing as "It's just up the street, we're not going that far etc."  Know your restaint/seatbelt information and use it... It will save you life and possibly the lives of your children.
